How to Create a Self-Care Routine

Self-care is about tuning in and asking yourself what you need right now, then aligning your actions with your needs. Simple everyday actions can help build habits that nurture your physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.

As women, we tend to put the needs of others before our own. Balancing business, work, and family commitments can become overwhelming, and at times lead to burnout.

A self-care routine that’s simple and easy to put into practice can give you the space to destress and connect with yourself while maintaining an active lifestyle.

Here are some simple but effective ideas to help you create a self-care routine that works best for you.

What is self-care?

Self-care can mean something different to every person. A broad definition encompasses a balance of the mind, body, and spirit. This involves taking care of your physical and mental well-being while working towards personal goals.

The key is to find the things that you love to do and incorporate regular activities that bring joy into your daily routine. Even the smallest of pursuits can reduce stress and help you to recharge.

3 simple steps to create a better self-care routine

There are so many different ways to practice self-care, it’s impossible to have a one-size-fits-all approach. Your self-care routine should resonate with you and fulfil your needs.

Here are 3 steps you can take to create a self-care routine that’s sustainable and enjoyable.

  1. Brainstorm activities you love

Whether it’s going to lunch with a friend or taking a long bath, write down the things you love to do and experience in this world. Focus on what brings you joy and a sense of fulfilment.

Write down as many things as you can think of in 30 minutes and each time you come across something new, add it to your list.

  • Start small and plan ahead

Choose an item from your list and schedule a time in your calendar. It’s important to start small and not to add too much in one go. For instance, you might choose to spend 20-minutes writing each morning before you start your day. Or you might decide to reconnect with a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while.

Be patient and treat yourself with kindness if things don’t go to plan straight away. To avoid unwanted distractions, tell your family and friends you’ll be unavailable during this time.

  • Evaluate and adjust

Allow yourself the flexibility to adjust your schedule if you hit a roadblock or commitments get in the way. Life can be unpredictable, therefore give yourself the permission to reevaluate and tweak your routine as you go. On days where you have limited time, you could opt for smaller activities, even if it’s taking just 5 minutes for yourself.

The key is to keep your self-care routine simple and flexible. What are your favourite ways to practice self-care? Let me know in the comments below.
